Follow a link to see a short movie on the truth behind factory farming
The Meatrix is a short movie about factory farming, available online at www.bancruelfarms.org/meatrix. It is a clever tribute to the sci-fi film The Matrix, where it is revealed to Neo that the world we live in is not real.
The Meatrix is “the lie we tell ourselves about where our food comes from”, hinting at the idea that consumers are living in a fantasy world when it comes to their perceptions of animal farming. The story goes as follows: Moopheus, a cool bull wearing a long coat and sunglasses, walks into a fairy-tale farmyard and talks to the pig Neo about the real world of farming. Neo chooses to have this reality revealed to him: the picture book farm yard disintegrates, and Neo finds himself in a factory farm where he discovers the realities of animal cruelty, antibiotic resistance, pollution and destruction of communities associated with factory farming.
Although the website comes from an American source, the film contains a powerful message relevant to all: that factory farming occurs behind closed doors and it is not transparent where our food comes from. This film will appeal to all ages, and for those not already involved in welfare campaigns and the exposure of animal cruelty it will provide an instant eye-opener.
