Will EU School Milk Scheme Include Non-Dairy? - 13/02/2009

VEGA responds to a Defra consultation on implementation of the EU School Milk Scheme.
VEGA's response to the Defra consultation on implementation of the EU School Milk Scheme follows:

1. In order to be accessible to all children, the regulations and their implementation must cater for children with aversions to animal-derived milks / dairy produce (eg those with allergies and strict vegetarians / vegans).

2. 'Dairy-free' alternatives to milk, yoghurt etc are widely available and many are of comparable or better nutritional value than milk (eg fortified with calcium and other vitamins / minerals).

3. Further development of these products will occur and production costs will likely fall as they become more popular, reflecting the lower environmental and real costs of production.
