Letter to the Independent on Sunday
Claims made during this latest National Dairy Week overlook the availability in chilled and UHT forms in supermarkets, health food shops, and many corner shops of milks and other cruelty-free "dairy" products. Many of these alternatives match or surpass cows' milk, for instance, in nutritional and environmental value: in particular, they contribute a steady source during the bleak winter weather in our northern latitudes of vitamin D.
Shoppers! Read the labels!
Cows' milk is snatched from their callow and frail calves; it's not "natural" for grown up cattle, let alone for a "nation of cowed human milksops of any age".
