VEGA comments on a letter on non-stun slaughter from Lord Trees in the Veterinary Record
VEGA is campaigning for a kinder farming that would avoid the exploitation of all animals and the horrors of the slaughterhouse. Mandatory stunning before slaughter would be a step in the right direction, but reducing the demand for meat and related products would save countless animals from needless slaughter.
The simplest way to reduce consumption of meats and other animal products would be much more vigorous application of vegetarian diets, for which our website provides various interesting items. One simple way to reduce the output of slaughterhouses would be to restrict the noise permitted in decibels.
The live export trade highlights the difficulties in protecting animals from mistreatment at the time of slaughter – much of the live export trade is destined for poorly regulated slaughterhouses overseas, mainly for ritual slaughter.
We hope that the BVA, FAWC and others with an interest in animal welfare will campaign vigorously for an end to non-stun slaughter and for alternatives to all animal products.
