Allegations of Illegal Employment
1. Claims of tight control exercised by religious authorities over slaughterhouses and food processing plants suffered a shock after a recent raid by officials of the UK Border Agency on premises in Milton Keynes, after a tip-off that illegal workers may be employed at the company. Great Food and Gilberts Kosher Foods in Bletchley, which is approved by the Beth Din and Halal Food Authority, was visited at about 10am on 21st January, where 3 male Sri Lankan failed asylum seekers were found to be employed by Great Food. The company now has to prove it carried out the correct right-to-work checks on its staff, or it could be fined, says the Border Agency.
2. Two of the Sri Lankans have now been charged with offences relating to the alleged use of false passports and the third has been given a caution (Meat Trades Journal, 05/02/10).
